Sumatra floods death toll reaches 1,177 as of January 4: BNPB

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) recorded the death toll from hydrometeorological disasters in several areas of Sumatra reached 1,177 as of January 4, 2026.

"These additional deaths increase the total number from three provinces. Yesterday, our recapitulation, cut off at 4:00 p.m., was 1,167, and today the number of deaths increased by 10, bringing the total to 1,177," BNPB's head of data and information center, Abdul Muhari, informed in a press conference on Sunday.

He explained that the additional deaths were spread across North Aceh (3), South Tapanuli (5), and West Sumatra (2).

In addition, the team on the field also found several people previously presumed missing, bringing the total number of deaths to 148.

"Today, 17 names were removed from the missing persons list, corrected by villages, sub-districts, and family members. This brings the total number of victims still on the joint SAR team's search list to 148," Muhari stated.

Meanwhile, the current number of evacuees is 242,174 people, he added.

Furthermore, he conveyed that several disaster-affected regions have extended their emergency response status. In Aceh, 10 regions have extended their emergency response status, with eight regions now entering the emergency transition phase.

"In North Sumatra, the emergency transition period is in 14 regions; the emergency response has ended in two regions and has not been extended. Therefore, there are no districts/cities in North Sumatra with emergency response status. North Sumatra Province is currently in emergency transition status," he detailed.

In West Sumatra, Muhari explained that the emergency response status has been extended in Agam District due to subsequent landslides, as cracks were detected that could potentially trigger further landslides if rain persisted for a significant period.

His team is still monitoring the situation and would take all mitigation measures to minimize the potential for further landslides, particularly in Agam District.

"Besides Agam District, no other regions are currently under emergency response status. So, all are in an emergency transition," he pointed out.
